If you depersonalize your home before selling it or holding an open house, prospective buyers will get a sense of how to live there and won’t feel as though they are violating your privacy. To get you started, here are three tips on how to depersonalize your home.
1. Take down personal photos
Put away those picture frames from your weddings or the pictures of your kids or pets, wrap them in a newspaper, and pack them in a box in preparation for moving day. Instead of seeing your family there, you want prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. Still, if you want to give your home some personality, leave a few portraits, landscape shots, or other types of pictures that are not too personal.
2. Get Rid of Those Funky Paint Colors
You might not notice that the walls in your living room or kitchen are odd, but potential buyers could. Painting your wall a neutral color or switching the wallpaper in the bedroom would be the nicest thing you could do while your home is still on the market. Your time (and money) may be expended, but it will be worthwhile.
3. Stack your collectibles away
Since they are your pride and joy, you might want to flaunt your collections, but doing so when you’re trying to sell your home is somehow not a smart idea. Buyers may feel that they are compromising your privacy if they see your specific preferences and hobbies. By taking away those decorations, you’re not only depersonalizing your home but also allowing its best features to take center stage.
