Holiday celebrations can provide a variety of potential risks, so it’s critical to take preventative measures to safeguard yourself and your family. Here are some tips to help you keep your family safe at home over the holiday season.
1. Inspect your tree and lights
Christmas tree ornaments and other festive decorations must be in good shape. The National Electrical Appliance Manufacturers’ Association (NEA) recommends that artificial trees have a solid frame and that their lights and cords be free of frays or exposed wires.
2. Secure your Christmas tree with the proper stand able to hold at least several liters of water, and be sure to water it daily
Avoid trees with fragile branches that easily break and obstruct walkways when choosing a tree. Christmas trees with lights should be properly secured to stay in place, preventing a potential fire hazard.
3. Keep any flammable items, such as decorative wrapping paper, wires or bows away from fireplaces, candles or other sources of heat
Keep them away from heat sources, combustibles, and Christmas trees. To stop them from burning, put any loose items or packages in closed bins.
4. Make sure any electric items are secured and away from water
To prevent trip risks, keep any cords tucked away and never allow anyone under the age of 15 to handle anything electric. Make sure no one touches the light strings that are strung up around windows or doors because doing so could result in an electric shock.
5. Prevent the spread of any germs or illnesses
Dedicate places for gatherings and parties and stock up on Kleenex, cleaning materials, and specific sanitizers.
6. Be mindful of any extra guests who may be present during the holiday season
Create a clear design and childproofing plan to ensure the safety of any small children and pets, and keep a first-aid kit on hand in case of any accidents.
