The holiday season can be a stressful time of year, and with that comes added stress of house security. Holidays are a favorite time for burglars to target homes, as families are away for longer. Having lights on a timer and stopping mail ahead of time could make a huge difference in the security of your home. Here are some tips to ensure your house is secure during the holidays.

1. Make your home look occupied

Burglars target homes that appear empty, so it is wise to invest in an automatic lighting system. The system will allow you to program when your lights are on or off. You can also ask a neighbor to open and close the curtains throughout the day so it appears there is a regular activity in the house.

2. Keep your valuables out of sight

Make sure you store all valuable items inside a safe place and away from any windows. Put jewelry, cash and gadgets in a place where they can’t be seen from the outside.

3. Install a home security system

The most significant deterrent to burglars is a home security system. Prices have come down, and installation is relatively easy. The system will allow you to monitor your home from any location and set off an alarm if someone tries to enter your home.

4. Secure all doors and windows

Make sure all of your doors and windows are secure; consider installing anti-theft devices such as deadbolts, peepholes, and window locks. Make sure you lock all entry points and be aware of any weak spots around your home.

5. Be vigilant

During the holidays, you should be extra vigilant of strangers in your area. Getting too comfortable while away on holiday is easy, but be conscious of any suspicious behavior. This includes checking door handles, testing windows, and anything else that may indicate a potential burglary. Also, remember to check your home periodically while you are away; this way, you can stay on top of any suspicious activity and take preventive measures if necessary.
